Gandalf is a cross between True Albino Teacher (TAT) and Melmac, a specialized Homestead Penis Envy isolation. Both parent strains are heavy hitters in the cubensis world. TAT brought the complete albino expression and genetic stability that made it a cornerstone of albino breeding work. Melmac contributed the PE-lineage potency, dense fruit structure, and the distinctive morphological quirks that set Penis Envy variants apart from standard cubensis. Crossing these two genetics produced something special — a strain that carries the best of both lines in a stable, reproducible package.

The morphology is what earned Gandalf its name. These specimens produce long, sturdy stems that resemble an ancient wizard's staff, topped with pristine white caps that characteristically curl upward at maturity rather than flattening out like most cubensis varieties. As the fruits mature, striking bluish to dark-blue spots appear on the cap surface, creating dramatic contrast against the white flesh. The overall appearance is tall, elegant, and immediately recognizable. Combined with pronounced blue bruising on handling, Gandalf produces some of the most photogenic specimens you'll ever grow.

Potency sits in the very high tier. Both parent lineages carry serious weight — TAT is no slouch on its own, and the Melmac PE genetics push potency even higher. Dose carefully and start low if you're coming from moderate-potency cubensis strains. The tall, elegant appearance can give a misleading impression of delicacy, but these fruits hit hard. Respect the lineage.

Growing Gandalf: What to Expect

Gandalf performs well on standard cubensis substrates. CVG bulk, grain to bulk, and BRF cakes all produce good results. Inoculate at 1 to 2cc per quart grain jar using sterile technique and colonize at 75 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Expect moderate colonization speed — Gandalf takes its time compared to aggressive strains, which is typical of genetics carrying both albino traits and PE heritage. Patience is part of growing this strain. Liquid culture helps close the gap since active mycelium begins colonizing immediately without a germination phase, but plan for a longer colonization window than you'd see with fast varieties like Golden Teacher.

Fruit at 74 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit with 85 to 95 percent relative humidity and good fresh air exchange. Provide indirect light on a 12/12 cycle. Gandalf rewards stable, consistent conditions — temperature fluctuations affect this strain more than hardier varieties, so keep your environment dialed in. The fruits develop their characteristic tall morphology and upward-curling caps during the later stages of growth, so resist the urge to harvest too early. Watch for veil development as your harvest signal. With albino genetics, you won't get obvious spore drop color cues, so monitor the veil closely. Multiple productive flushes are standard with proper soak and repeat technique.

Gandalf offers moderate contamination resistance, better than some sensitive PE variants but not bulletproof. The albino appearance creates the usual challenge of reduced visual contrast for spotting early contamination against white mycelium and white fruits. Maintain strong sterile technique throughout and consider agar work to confirm clean, vigorous culture before committing to bulk. The genetic stability from both parent lines means consistent morphological expression flush after flush — once you see those tall, curling specimens emerge, you'll get them reliably across subsequent flushes. Gandalf is approachable for growers at any level who maintain good fundamentals and give it the patience it asks for.
