Growing Grasstree: Substrates, Environment & What to Expect

Grasstree is a manure-loving species, and substrate choice is the single most important decision you’ll make. Aged horse or cow manure supplemented with straw is the proven performer, with pH maintained around 7.5 to 8.0. This strain does not fruit well on CVG, coco coir, or other standard cubensis substrates. If you’re coming from cubensis cultivation, leave those recipes behind for this one. A proper casing layer using peat moss, vermiculite, and hydrated lime is essential for pinning. Inoculate at 1 to 2cc per container using sterile technique — Grasstree’s aggressive mycelium means less inoculum is often sufficient.

Fruiting requires tighter environmental control than cubensis. Maintain temperatures at 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity at 85 to 95 percent RH. Enhanced fresh air exchange is critical — Pan Cyans demand more FAE than cubes. Provide indirect light on a 12/12 cycle. Harvest just before or as the veil breaks. Grasstree rewards good technique with full, dense flushes, and multiple productive flushes are common when conditions stay dialed in.

Pan Cyans have a reputation for being difficult, but Grasstree is one of the more forgiving varieties within the species. The key is understanding that it plays by different rules than cubensis. Get your substrate right, keep your environment consistent, and maintain strong sterile technique.
