The taxonomic history of Semperviva is a story of rediscovery. First described as Psilocybe semperviva by mycologists Roger Heim and Roger Cailleux in 1958, it was later reclassified by Gastón Guzmán as Psilocybe hoogshagenii var. convexa in 1983, then finally established as the distinct species Psilocybe subtropicalis by Guzmán in 1995. DNA analysis by Alan Rockefeller in 2019 placed it in section Zapotecorum, confirming its separation from P. hoogshagenii. Through all those name changes, the species itself remained what it always was — resilient, potent, and deeply connected to the indigenous cultures of southern Mexico.

That cultural connection runs deep. The Mixe people call it atka:t ("judge") and consider it a wise mushroom sought by shamans for important decisions. The Mazatec know it as pajaritos de monte ("little birds of the woods"), while in Nahuatl it carries the name teotlaquilnanácatl ("divine mushroom that describes or paints"). This isn't a strain created in a lab — it's a species with centuries of traditional use and reverence behind it.

Growing Semperviva: What to Expect

Semperviva is one of the most forgiving species you can cultivate. It thrives on CVG bulk substrate with grain spawn, but there are a few key differences from standard cubensis cultivation to keep in mind. First, this species prefers a drier substrate than cubensis — aim for the consistency of a well-wrung sponge rather than the wetter field capacity that cubes prefer. Second, a casing layer is required for fruiting. Use a peat moss, vermiculite, and hydrated lime mix applied over your colonized substrate. Third, unmodified tubs tend to outperform modified setups with this species. Inoculate at 1 to 2cc per quart grain jar using sterile technique.

The temperature tolerance on Semperviva is remarkably wide — it thrives anywhere from 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, which gives you far more flexibility than cubensis. Maintain 85 to 95 percent relative humidity during fruiting and provide indirect light on a 12/12 cycle. The extended fruiting period is one of Semperviva's most notable traits. Where most cubensis strains give you two to four productive flushes before exhausting the substrate, Semperviva can keep producing for weeks to months with proper care between flushes. Soak the substrate for 12 to 24 hours between flushes and maintain consistent conditions.

The standout cultivation trait is contamination resistance. Semperviva produces thick, rhizomorphic mycelium that outcompetes molds and bacteria more effectively than most species. The "ever-living" name was earned in part by this tenacity.
